40% to 50%: If You Can’t Say “99ers” or “Black” in Detroit, Then Where?

The President’s speech in Detroit was over 3,000 words — yet two were missing. Everyone gets a bit testy when people insist the President should focus on one group — particularly when the focus is race based. Why should he focus on blacks when we’re “all” Americans? I understand. But what if you’re in Detroit? Detroit features 40% and 50% unemployment. When the President was in Iowa he talked on rural concerns. When the President went to El Paso he spoke on Hispanic concerns. What’s wrong with that? Yesterday he was in Detroit, topic: Unemployment. Obviously the city wasn’t picked out of a hat. It was the second stop on the CBC jobs tour where Rep. Maxine Waters had a few points to make about the President. It was the same Waters who told a Obama Admin official to say “tea party” and “black” instead of dodging those words when he spoke of unemployment and political obstructionism.
